The krak des chevaliers castle in Syria and the cobbler in Damascus .
The Syrian Cobbler in Damascus.
This image of the Cobbler was taken in Damascus. Damascus being the capital city of Syria.
I visited there around 2010 just before the terrible state of affairs there now but you could feel the tension in the air and felt that something was going to happen. Why did I want to go there with it’s life is cheap mentality and being there put me way outside of my comfort zone! I am very interested in seeing how people live in different places. In the case of Syria though I defiantly wouldn’t go there again and I count myself lucky that I got away with it the first time. So I wouldn’t push my luck!
Walking the streets of Damascus I came across the cobbler and instantly thought that him and his workplace would make a great image. I sat and watched him work for sometime before taking my camera out of its bag to get my picture. I think It’s only fair to the subject to make sure that they are comfortable with you being there and your presents. This importantly I think makes for good and more relaxed pictures. I waved to thank him after taking his picture and happily went on my way.
Another unforgettable thing happened when I was in Syria that I think about sometimes. I was shown a castle that was built and inhabited in the 11th century. It was fantastic to see and on this blog post I have put some photos I took and some information etc. about it from Wikipedia.
